Flexibility mindsets: Reducing biases that result from spontaneous processing

نویسندگان

چکیده

Spontaneous (i.e., heuristic, fast, effortless, and associative) processing has clear advantages for human cognition, but it can also elicit undesirable outcomes such as stereotyping other biases. In the current article, we argue that biased judgements behaviour result from spontaneous be reduced by activating various flexibility mindsets. These mindsets are characterised consideration of alternatives beyond one’s thoughts behaviours could, thus, contribute to bias reduction. Research demonstrated eliciting via goal cognitive conflicts, counterfactual thinking,, recalling own past flexible or behaviour, adopting a promotion focus reduces biases in behaviour. We summarise evidence effectiveness across wide variety important phenomena – including creative performance, prejudice, interpersonal decision-making. Finally, discuss underlying processes potential boundary conditions.

IT Support for Reducing Group Judgment Biases

Systematic biases have been found in both individual and group judgments, calling for research into debiasing approaches. Although individual debiasing has been studied to some extent, no parallel effort exists for group debiasing. This paper advocates the use of group support systems (G&S) for group debiasing and presents a theoretical perspective on how the impact may be achieved. Special att...

Reducing Lateral Visual Biases in Displays

The human visual system is composed of multiple physiological components that apply multiple mechanisms in order to cope with the rich visual content it encounters. The complexity of this system leads to non-trivial relations between what we see and what we perceive, and in particular, between the raw intensities of an image that we display and the ones we perceive where various visual biases a...

Towards quantitative connectivity analysis: reducing tractography biases

Diffusion MRI tractography is often used to estimate structural connections between brain areas and there is a fast-growing interest in quantifying these connections based on their position, shape, size and length. However, a portion of the connections reconstructed with tractography is biased by their position, shape, size and length. Thus, connections reconstructed are not equally distributed...

Mindsets That Promote Resilience: When Students Believe That Personal Characteristics Can Be Developed

Because challenges are ubiquitous, resilience is essential for success in school and in life. In this article we review research demonstrating the impact of students’ mindsets on their resilience in the face of academic and social challenges. We show that students who believe (or are taught) that intellectual abilities are qualities that can be developed (as opposed to qualities that are fixed)...

Metabolic Flexibility of Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria

Dissimilatory sulfate-reducing prokaryotes (SRB) are a very diverse group of anaerobic bacteria that are omnipresent in nature and play an imperative role in the global cycling of carbon and sulfur. In anoxic marine sediments sulfate reduction accounts for up to 50% of the entire organic mineralization in coastal and shelf ecosystems where sulfate diffuses several meters deep into the sediment....
